Sharpening Interview Skills

Last Friday, 10 volunteers from Beneficial State Bank and Craig Communications volunteered their time to be on a mock interview panel with our students! Dressed in their sharp clothes, our students did one-on-one mock interviews with the volunteers. Many of them were offered jobs on the spot!

Our volunteers’ most memorable moments:

“When I asked about their life passions and their faces lit up with joy!”

“The students were genuinely grateful for the feedback they received.”

“I was so impressed! They interviewed better than some college grads and professionals I’ve interviewed.”

It was an amazing experience for our students:

“I was so nervous going in thinking: ‘Why are these people interested in me?’ But I found out that they really care and want us to be successful.”

“You gave me the courage I need to go out there and interview well!”

Teamster Apprentices!

Teamster Apprentices / CivicorpsCONGRATS to our first two Teamster Truck Driving Apprentices at Waste Management: Wulliam and Corey!!

They have graduated from our truck driving pre-apprenticeship program and are on the road to a lucrative union career!

Background on our new Teamster Apprenticeship Program:
Our new city-wide garbage franchise agreement helped us create a training pipeline for youth to enter the Teamsters and Mechanics unions at Waste Management – where in just a few years youth can earn a salary of $70,000/year with a pension.

Thus, our graduates can apply to enter one of our 10 truck driving pre-apprenticeships at our social enterprise or one of 10 additional apprenticeships/internships in partnership with Waste Management of Alameda County that lead to lucrative union jobs.

These new union internships, pre-apprenticeships, and apprenticeships are a game changer for resilient youth and their families as well as the entire city of Oakland.

Outstanding Teacher of the Year!

Our English teacher, Avery Moore, was awarded OUSD’s Charter School Outstanding Teacher of the Year!

How do you make school engaging and relevant for disconnected 18-26 year high school drop outs? Create a space where student voice is heard and honored. Civicorps’ English teacher, Avery Moore, has done that and so much more for our school community. Avery’s quiet, calm, and nurturing spirit has made quite an impact on students, staff, and our school community.

Outstanding Teacher of the Year

He has built up an English/Language Arts program that meets the needs of a diverse range of learning styles and aptitudes. He has put time and energy into creating unique learning opportunities that build on students’ interests, takes them outside of the classroom, and into the “real” world. Through his Children’s Literature seminar, he has forged a partnership between Civicorps and MLK Elementary School. After reading and analyzing a variety of classic children’s stories, Civicorps’ students write and then read their own original stories to elementary school students.

Avery also partnered with UCSF on a photo documentary project on community health issues that culminated with a community “gallery walk” of their work and an NPR video. Seeing a need to help students earn their driver’s license, Avery has used the DMV handbook as text, and then stood in line for hours with students so they can take the test. These are just a few examples of his impact on the students, school, and community.

Having Avery honored as an Oakland Charter School Teacher of the Year has shone a light on all that he brings to our school community — we are thrilled to have him honored!
