College and Career Fair 2018

Civicorps’ College and Career Fair 2018 featured opportunities for students to learn about job skills, trades, and pathways to college. We had representative from the following Bay Area programs:

During this series of presentations, students asked questions, signed up and applied for programs, and networked with the representatives. The College and Career Fair is an annual event that permits Civicorps students to explore different career options as they prepare to graduate and earn their high school diploma.

Making Career Connections

“At first I thought I was coming here just to get a check. Now I realize that Civicorps is more than that, it’s an awakening!” Radisha, Class of 1998

On April 1st, we hosted a College and Career Fair to introduce our students to a variety of pathways they can take to advance their career. We kicked off the fair with a panel of alumni who shared what they learned from Civicorps as well as offered advice to current students.

Making Career Connections / Civicorps

“Civicorps taught me to never quit. That pushed me to keep climbing up the ladder to accomplish my goals.”Brandon, Class of 2014

Immediately after the panel, students participated in interactive workshops where they discussed: transferring to a university from a community college, choosing the right major, entering apprenticeships, and pursuing career opportunities in technology, engineering, journalism, human resources, and culinary arts.

Workshops were led by:

  • 42, Inc.
  • Tradeswomen
  • Pipefitters
  • Lather’s Apprenticeships
  • Kaiser Permanente
  • Waste Management
  • Beyond Emancipation
  • San Jose State University
  • Laney College

“My favorite workshop was the SJSU presentation. It encouraged me to go to college!” – Dlorah, current student

Students also networked with presenters to make connections that will aid them in pursing college, internships, or apprenticeships following graduation.

“I loved talking to Brisha. The Waste Management workshop motivated me to keep pushing forward no matter what!” – Liz Marie, current student

Check out pictures from the fair on our Facebook, and wish our students well on their future endeavors!

Succeeding in College

After students graduate from Civicorps, we provide another 12-months of career and college support, and over 70% of our graduates enroll in college. Read about our students’ success!

Vineesha

Succeeding in College / Civicorps

Everything I learned at Civicorps prepared me for college. I never missed a class and was always on time. Not only am I a 4.0 college student, but my remedial English teacher was so impressed with my writing that she gave permission to skip the next level and go straight into College Level English!

I’m so thankful for all of the support I get from Civicorps staff as well as the Hermina Tick scholarship (started by a Civicorps donor!), which allowed me to buy the laptop that I desperately needed for class. I feel like I’m taking all of my success at Civicorps and bringing it to Merritt College, and I know that if I need ANYTHING, Civicorps will be there for me — all the way to graduation.

Lovell

Lovell at Merritt College Graduation

I would not have made it to college graduation without Civicorps. Mr. Dunn, Yvette, Elaine, and Paul — they were my foundation. If I felt lost, I would come to Civicorps and see so much success, achievement, and potential and it would give me hope.

Now, my achievement as a Merritt College graduate is giving Civicorps grads hope that they can also wear this cap and gown and pass down a legacy of achievement.

As a supporter of Civicorps, you make it possible for us to support students like Vineesha and Lovell.
