The Institute
The Institute for
Citizenship Education and Teacher Preparation
The Institute was created with the following
mandates
- Schools must prepare children for the challenges,
opportunities, and responsibilities of life in a democratic,
pluralistic society.
- This preparation must not only unite academics
and service, but also the arts and spiritual development. Through
this alliance, students explore their values and practice the
necessary skills for civic engagement.
The Institute
- Bridges the gap between practice and research;
- Develops and pilots new curriculum and assessment
procedures at the elementary and high school levels;
- Provides a new approach to teacher preparation
and professional development;
- Disseminates best practices or "case
studies" to influence educational policy.
Future Plans
Over the next few years, we will focus on: curriculum development,
conducting research, teacher pre-service and professional development,
and organizing an advisory committee to guide us. The Institute
will also work on developing two new charter schools, a Civicorps
Schools Middle School and High School. As with the Civicorps Elementary
School and Civicorps Academy, these new charter schools will be open to any students
residing in the Bay Area.
