Help students get the extra push they need to graduate by providing one-on-one and small group educational support through one of the following opportunities:
In-Class Academic Coach
(2-4 hours a week) commits to assisting in a class (English, Math, Science, Social Studies or Research) once or twice a week. This position supports the planned lesson for the day. This volunteer position allows for Academic Coaches to learn efficacious teaching strategies and to create long-lasting relationships with Civicorps staff and students.
Daytime: Two-hour time slots: 10:25am – 12:25pm or 1:10-3pm, Monday-Thursday
Evening: Research Class – Mondays and Wednesdays 4-6 pm
Floating Academic Coach
(4-8 hours a month) assists with writing or math assignments, reads test questions aloud, and reviews classroom material with the students. Coaches have the opportunity to work with the same students each week, building strong relationships.
Evening: Two-hour time slots from 4-6pm, Monday-Thursday
Test Preparation Academic Coach
(2+ hours a year) provides one-on-one Math and English test preparation support (California High School Exit Exams). Civicorps provides all test-preparation materials that Coaches need to work one-on-one with students.
Evening: Two-hour time slots from 4-6pm, Monday-Thursday during these dates:
January 21-30, 2014
April 28 – May 8, 2014
Academic Coaches do not need to have a background in teaching, just an enthusiastic and patient attitude.
I am inspired by the students who are working hard to beat the odds of their challenging beginnings. I love seeing the ‘light bulbs’ go on when I’m working with a student who is confused by a concept. The students are always appreciative of the support I provide. I always look forward to my time at Civicorps!”– Sally, Volunteer Academic Coach
Civicorps invites families, corporations, and individuals to join us for conservation events in partnership with East Bay Regional Parks District.
