History of EBCC/Civicorps Schools
In 1983, Founding Executive Director Joanna
Lennon established the East Bay Conservation Corps (EBCC), currently
Civicorps Schools. Civicorps Schools is the oldest and largest
regional urban corps in California.
Civicorps Schools has built an excellent reputation
over the last 25 years; changing our name in 2007 was a difficult
decision. Why did we change our name? Simply put, EBCC's programs
and services have grown beyond the East Bay. "Civicorps Schools"
illustrates our mission of promoting civic responsibility, service-learning,
and education.
A national model for other corps and an international
model for education, Civicorps Schools has changed the lives of
thousands of youth and young adults by furnishing job, life, academic,
and citizenship skills through environmental-service projects.
Civicorps Schools has also served as an important
model for education and policy reform. To learn more about our
history and our influence on national and international community
service, legislation, and teaching models, please download our
